Question of elderly care
The deepest impact of the changing scenario of society lies on relations. Relationships between parents and children have also come under pressure. It is found in the fact that in 1992, when the percentage of elderly people living alone or with their spouse was 9, this has increased to 19 in 2006. With democratic transformation, modernization, growing migration and individualistic culture for progress are some of the reasons which have pushed the society towards it. The reasons for this trend can be divided into some points.
- Growing lifespan and declining fertility rates mean that the growing population of the elderly and the decreased children for lifting it. Since 1991, the number of single families has increased rapidly. Of these, 70 percent are single families.
- Due to better economic opportunities, the youths are starting to move away from home soon. Not even that they go to the surrounding areas only. Young family members have started living in remote or abroad for jobs or work. Economic survey of 2017 shows that between 2011 and 2016, about 9 million people are being transferred for education or work every year. Most of the cities are single families. Only 8.3 percent of the urban elderly are living in joint families.
- Due to Western influence, there has been a decrease in the number of adult children of the family, who regard parental service as their obligation. In 1984, the number of children in such service was 91 percent, which has now dropped to 51 percent.
Government effort
Given the growing social, family and economic insecurity of the elderly, the government implemented the Foster and Welfare Act, 2007 of Parents and Senior Citizens in 2007. To give financial assistance like the monthly allowance for the maintenance of the parents, it becomes the legal obligation of the child. Expansion of this law was made in 2018 and provision for sending irresponsible children to jail was also made. The elderly, with the help of this law, will be able to get their rights.
Apart from economic security, law can not do anything in the case of family sweetness. The problem of loneliness is increasing in the elderly. Half of the elderly are living a life of sadness and neglect. Some feel that they are burdensome. By 2050, one in five out of five will be above 60. Due to the increasing trend and migration needs of the small family, the appearance of the future appears to be blurred.
On the other hand, sociologists believe that thinking and adopting towards the constant changes should be adopted. An alternative to this comes out as old age homes. An excellent form of old age homes is aided life, in which the elderly couple can lead a life with the help of a system. In this type of society, there is a provision for doctors, come, entertainment etc. for them. From time to time, their children also visit them. This type of choice decreases pressure on the children. Between 2011-15, the number of people living in these types of old age homes in Kerala has increased by 69 percent.
Indian society is facing a variety of economic changes. It is a common fact that due to the growing opportunities of progress, it is not possible to have a traditional form of family. It is to see how we can balance our traditional values and moral obligations with increasing economic opportunities and personal freedom.
